LAS VEGAS — Alberto Puello won the vacant WBC interim junior welterweight title via split decision in an upset of Gary Antuanne Russell on the undercard of the Gervonta Davis-Frank Martin PBC on Prime PPV undercard on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Puello, the former WBA 140-pound titleholder, won 115-112 and 114-113 while one judge had Russell by a shockingly wide score of 118-109.
“I got down on my knees and the first thing I did was thank God, and then I said, ‘I made it.’ The weight barrier, the time away from my family, it was all worth it,” Puello said through an interpreter. “It feels great to be (an interim) champion, because this will mark the beginning of a new chapter in my life.”
