Carlos Adames got the knockout victory against Julian “J-Rock” Williams even if the stoppage was controversial.
Adames stopped former unified junior middleweight champion Williams in the ninth round of an entertaining fight to retain the WBC interim middleweight belt in the main event of a Premier Boxing Champions tripleheader Saturday night on Showtime before 4,120 at The Armory in Minneapolis.
“We gave the fans a great fight and I accomplished my goal, which was walking out of here with the (interim) title,” Adames said through an interpreter.
Although Adames nearly knocked out Williams in the fourth round and was clearly winning the fight — 77-74, 78-74 and a surprisingly wide 80-72 — referee Mark Nelson’s stoppage will be debated because Williams was literally throwing a punch at Adames when he intervened.
