A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription please consider it. If you have already, I truly appreciate it. Also, consider a gift subscription for the Fight Freak in your life.
LAS VEGAS — I’m not quite sure exactly how many trips I have made to Las Vegas over the past 22-plus years of covering boxing but it is around 125. That’s a lot of airline miles, a lot of cab lines, a lot of press conferences and weigh-ins and, of course, a lot of water pressure reports
I have covered fights at many venues in the city and stayed at many hotels, but my home away from home, where I have stayed the most, by far, is the MGM Grand. It has hosted tons of major fights either in its Grand Garden Arena or as the host hotel for cards that take place at nearby T-Mobile Arena.
I arrived here once again on Wednesday morning to cover the much-anticipated third chapter of the Canelo Alvarez-Gennadiy Golovkin rivalry.
After two controversial decisions in middleweight championship fights in 2017 and 2018 — an outrageous draw that Golovkin clearly won in the first fight and a Canelo majority decision win in the second bout that was highly disputed — the third fight, which is for Alvarez’s undisputed super middleweight title, will take place on Saturday (DAZN PPV and PPV.com, 8 p.m. ET) at T-Mobile Arena.
Because I have covered so many fights here, there is a certain rhythm and routine once you hit town. I don’t ever take it for granted but sometimes I forget that a lot of fight fans don’t get to see what I see during a fight week or go where I get to go.
So, I thought I would show you where I went and what I saw on Wednesday with a series of photos and an explanation of it all.
