Conor Benn said during the build up to his fight with the little-known Peter Dobson that he envisioned a first-round knockout win, but the fight wound up going longer. A lot longer.
Although Benn dominated, he was forced to go the 12-round distance for the first time in his career in a lopsided unanimous decision win in their 151-pound bout that headlined a Matchroom Boxing card on DAZN on Saturday at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, where the fight took place in the afternoon to accommodate an evening audience in Benn’s home country of England.
Fighting for only the second time in 22 months, Benn won 119-109, 118-110 and 118-110. Fight Freaks Unite also scored it 119-109.
“I was in cruise control. It was good work,” Benn said. “I always go for it in the first round. If I see an opening I take it. I don’t miss when I shoot. I took my shots. He was still standing. He was tough. He was in there to survive, really. I was disappointed. I come out like I said I would come out and if he had opened up instead of surviving then he would have been in for it.”
Benn was boxing in the United States for the second time in a row because he remains unable to get a license in the United Kingdom due to the ongoing case surrounding his infamous two failed Voluntary Anti-Doping Association drug tests for performance-enhancing drugs in 2022, the second result becoming public days before he was set for a major pay-per-view bout against Chris Eubank Jr. on Oct. 8, 2022 that was canceled.
