LAS VEGAS — When super middleweight contender Edgar Berlanga turned pro in 2016, Canelo Alvarez was middleweight champion and already a mega star. But that did not stop Berlanga, who embarked on a streak on scoring first-round knockouts in his first 16 fights, from looking far into the future.
Berlanga believed that if he continued to develop like he and his team believed he could that someday a fight with Alvarez could become a reality.
And guess what? It happened.
The Brooklyn, New York-born Puerto Rican Berlanga will challenge Alvarez, the Mexican superstar, for his unified super middleweight title and the lineal championship on Mexican Independence Day weekend in the main event of a PBC on Prime PPV on Saturday (Prime Video PPV, PPV.com, DAZN PPV, 8 p.m. ET, $89.99) at T-Mobile Arena.
After a tough negotiation for the fight, Berlanga got the call from manager Keith Connolly, who spearheaded talks, telling him they had made a deal. Berlanga said he thought back to his early days as a pro when he first dreamed of the fight.
