LAS VEGAS — Canelo Alvarez said throughout the buildup to his fight with Jermell Charlo that he wanted to face him because Charlo “did not believe in my skills.”
Charlo probably now is very much a believer after Alvarez dropped him in the seventh round, nearly doubled him up in punches landed and routed him with ease to retain the undisputed super middleweight title in the Showtime PPV main event on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena, which was packed with Canelo fans.
Alvarez, boxing’s biggest star, won 119-108, 118-109 and 118-109 in his sixth overall super middleweight title defense and third of the undisputed crown, which is historical. No male fighter in the four-belt era had ever made more than two undisputed title defenses. Fight Freaks Unite had Alvarez winning 120-107.
