When undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and challenger Jamie Munguia came face to face recently for their lone appearance together before fight week to kick off the promotion for their bout at a news conference in Beverly Hills, California, it was a sleepy affair.
There was zero electricity, no viral moment, no trash talk. Instead it was filled with thank yous, respect and a lot of conversation about how big of a deal the fight would be for Mexican boxing, considering the showdown matches two of Mexico’s best in the main event of a Premier Boxing Champions pay-per-view card on Cinco de Mayo weekend — May 4 (Prime Video PPV, DAZN PPV, PPV.com) — at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena, where Alvarez will headline for the ninth time.
But boxing fans can take solace knowing that despite the low-key news conference, the fight itself figures to produce action given the long track record of the combatants for being in crowd-pleasing fights.
