The fight did not go as Jack Catterall had hoped it would but he nonetheless moved up to welterweight by rebounding from a defeat in a one-sided technical decision over Harlem Eubank on Saturday.
The fight was called off at one second of the seventh round due to severe cuts both men suffered as a result of an accidental head butt in the sixth round of the main event of the Matchroom Boxing card on DAZN at AO Arena in Manchester, England, Catterall’s home region.
As Catterall bled from a cut over his right eye and Eubank did the same from a wound over his left eye, the fight was sent to the scorecards and Catterall won 69-66, 69-66 and 69-65. Fight Freaks Unite also had it 69-65, scoring the seventh round even since nothing had occurred in the one second that it lasted.
It was an inglorious conclusion to a forgettable fight that featured little sustained action due to styles that simply did not mesh well at all, which is something many predicted would be the case when the fight was made.
But at least for Catterall, he was able to rebound from when he faced Arnold Barboza Jr., also in Manchester, and lost a split decision in February in a fight for the vacant WBO interim junior welterweight title. With little prospect of another title bout in the division any time soon, Catterall moved up to welterweight and took on Eubank, an untested but undefeated member of one of Britain’s leading boxing families as he is the nephew of legend Chris Eubank Sr. and a cousin of Chris Eubank Jr.
