LAS VEGAS — After Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford made their way to their face off after showing off their pristine physiques before the cheering fans inside the T-Mobile Arena at Friday afternoon’s ceremonial weigh-in, Spence had something to say to his foe.
But it wasn’t nasty words, trash talk or threats.
“You ain’t gotta thank me for making this fight happen,” said Spence, whose refusal to let the fight get away from him was the key getting it done after five years of fan and media demand.
Crawford responded, “I know. You don’t gotta thank me either.”
And then two of the best fighters in the world shook hands in an electrifying moment.
Crawford then spoke the words so many have thought during the build up to the most significant fight of the year.
“We gonna make history, baby,” Crawford said as he leaned close to Spence before they continued their staredown.
Spence, who weighed 147 pounds at the behind-closed-doors official weigh-in Friday morning, and Crawford, who was 146.8, will make history because the winner of the fight on Saturday (Showtime PPV and PPV.com, 8 p.m. ET, $84.99) will unify the four welterweight titles — Spence holds the WBC, IBF and WBA belts and Crawford the WBO — to become the division’s first undisputed champion of the four-belt era.
