Gervonta Davis, who was arrested in South Florida on Tuesday afternoon on a domestic violence charge, allegedly struck the mother of one of his children in the head, according to the police incident report by the Broward County Sheriff’s Department.
Davis, who faces one misdemeanor count of battery causing bodily harm, spent Tuesday night in jail. After a hearing on Wednesday, he posted $1,000 bail and was released. His next court date has not yet been set.
Davis, who has had numerous legal issues throughout his life, is scheduled to defend the WBA “regular” lightweight title against junior lightweight titlist Hector Luis Garcia on Jan. 7 in the main event of a Showtime PPV card at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. As of Thursday evening, the fight and card remain on.
According to the police incident report, which was obtained by Fight Freaks Unite, Davis, who has a home in South Florida and was training there for the upcoming fight, was arrested at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday.
The arrest was made, according to the incident report, about 90 minutes after Davis “did actually and intentionally touch and strike the listed victim,” whose name was redacted, “against her will and did intentionally cause bodily harm to her.
“Gervonta Davis and (the victim) do not live together, however, they do have a female child together. Gervonta Davis struck (the victim) on the right side of her head with a closed hand type slap. The strike caused a small abrasion to the inside of (the victim’s) upper lip on the right side of her mouth. (The victim) was able to exit the home where she called 911.”
On the 911 call, which TMZ posted on social media, the distressed woman told the operator, “Please help me! I need help, please. I'm trying to go home, I have my baby in the car and he attacked me in front of the kid and now he’s messing up my tires! I need help, please! Please help me! He’s going to kill me!”
As the operator attempted to get the woman’s location, the call ended but she called back, asked for help again and added, “I need to go home. I’m in danger right now!”
In a since-deleted Instagram post, Davis denied that he struck the woman. The post included what Davis was a photo of him and his older daughter watching the movie “Frozen” shortly before the alleged incident.
“DO NOT LET THESE PEOPLE MISGUIDE YOU ALL ON THIS BULLSHIT…THIS WAS MOMENTS BEFORE ME AND MY CHILD MOTHER HAD ARGUMENT! WATCHING FROZEN WITH MY OLDEST DAUGHTER,” Davis wrote. “I NEVER PUT MY HANDS ON MY CHILD MOTHER NOR MY FUCKING DAUGHTER ARE YOU FUCKING CRAZY!! IM NOT A MONSTER I BEEN QUIET FOR TOO LONG. I DONT HAVE MEDIA TEAM, PR, GOOD LAWYER…spokesman nothing off that…THAT'S THE ONLY REASON I’M DOING THIS NOW! JUST TO CLEAR MY NAME!”
Davis was previously charged with simple battery domestic violence in Coral Gables, Florida, in February 2020 following an incident with the mother of another of his children at a charity basketball game. The incident was caught on a 14-second cell phone video that went viral on social media. Prosecutors eventually dropped the charges earlier this month.
Davis not only faces the charge stemming from Tuesday’s arrest but he is due to go on trial beginning Feb. 16 in his hometown of Baltimore. He faces 14 charges related to an alleged hit-and-run accident in the early morning hours of Nov. 5, 2020 that injured four people. If convicted, Davis faces a maximum of 50 months in prison.
The 28-year-old Davis (27-0, 25 KOs), who is due to make his fourth title defense against the Dominican Republic’s Garcia (16-0, 10 KOs), 31, took the fight despite having already agreed to an April 15 mega fight in Las Vegas on Showtime PPV with fellow star Ryan Garcia (no relation to Hector). That match is slated to be a nontitle bout at 136 pounds.
Showtime officials, TGB Promotions and Premier Boxing Champions have yet to issue statements on the situation, although they continue to proceed with the Jan. 7 event, including holding a media call with undercard fighters on Wednesday.
