DAZN's plan to put Prograis-Haney on PPV, if it happens, is offensive
Plus tons of random thoughts: Navarrete-Valdez excellent, AZ commission not so much; give AJ a break; Showtime shines on Spence-Crawford; sad state of middleweight; 2 who should be on HOF ballot; MORE
A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. With lightweight champion Devin Haney deciding to move up to junior welterweight, a deal for him to fight WBC titlist Regis Prograis has been on the table from Matchroom Boxing.
Prograis has said he has signed his end but the Haney side is not done, and with the fight not yet finalized, Matchroom Boxing has lost the planned Oct. 28 date at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, a source with knowledge of the site situation told me.
(As an aside, Oct. 28 never made sense anyway since the boxing world’s attention will be focused all week on the much higher-profile Tyson Fury-Francis Ngannou fight on the same day.)
Anyway, with MGM Grand unavailable for Oct. 28 for Prograis-Haney that means they need to find another site. That impacts the gate money, which is integral to the deal, the source said. That means there is no fight at the moment.
There is also the matter of DAZN’s misguided intention of putting the fight on pay-per-view, which not everyone involved in the Prograis-Haney deal endorses from what I am told.
So much for DAZN’s “Game. Changed.” catch phrase.
This is where I get on my soap box and tell you to get off my lawn. You’ve been warned.
