Former WBC heavyweight titlist Deontay Wilder scored two knockdowns en route to a seventh-round knockout of Tyrrell Herndon in his return from a one-year layoff and shoulder surgery on Friday night at Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kansas.
Headlining the “Legacy Reloaded” pay-per-view card put on by Global Combat Collective, Wilder came into the bout having lost four of his last five — including two knockouts to Tyson Furry in the second and third bouts of their historic world title trilogy — and with many pronouncing his career over.
But Wilder, one of the most devastating punchers in heavyweight history, scored his first win in nearly three years and did so with relative ease against the game but outgunned Herndon.
“I give thanks to my opponent. You’re a tough guy, man. I appreciate the work,” Wilder said. “I laid off a long time, getting myself back together, mentally, physically and emotionally. It’s been a long road for me. I’m just glad to be back in the ring.”
