A hefty dose of boxing random thoughts…
A few things on uber-talented IBF welterweight titlist Jaron “Boots” Ennis, who signed with Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn on Wednesday:
1. Hearn gets one of the most talented fighters in boxing but a guy whose career has been poorly handled for years.
2. It’s about time Ennis got with a promoter who will, you know, ACTUALLY PROMOTE HIM! His previous promoter, NOW Boxing, was a promoter in name only. It did not put on events. It did nothing to raise Ennis’ profile. It only farmed Ennis out to box on PBC shows on Showtime. Hearn will shout about Ennis from the rooftops and he excels at that.
3. Per sources, Top Rank was interested in talking to Ennis but his team never got back with Top Rank for any discussions and Golden Boy did not pursue him.
4. Hearn is not deep at welterweight but one fight he could try to put together that would make waves: Ennis against Conor Benn, who is licensed in the U.S. even if he remains banned in the U.K.
