Jared Anderson, considered by many to be boxing’s most promising heavyweight, had his struggles on Saturday night but still came through to keep his perfect record intact.
Anderson was visibly hurt in the fifth round — the first he lost as a professional — but he still had more than enough to rout former IBF titleholder Charles Martin before a partisan crowd of 7,234 in the main event of the Top Rank Boxing on ESPN card at the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio, Anderson’s hometown, where he boxed for the first time as a pro.
The fight was also Anderson’s first main event and the first time he had to go past the sixth round en route to winning 99-90, 99-90 and 98-91. Fight Freaks Unite also had it 99-90 for Anderson, who faced by far the most notable opponent of his career in Martin and dropped him in the third round.
