It was ugly, but Prograis beats Zorrilla by split decision, retains title

A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription please consider it. If you have already, I truly appreciate it! Also, consider a gift subscription for the Fight Freak in your life.
Regis Prograis had retained the WBC junior welterweight title but he was not pleased with his performance and surely his hometown fans couldn’t have been either, not after watching the hot mess and he and Danielito Zorrilla produced.
“New Orleans, I’m sorry,” Prograis told the crowd. “I wanted to put on a little better performance. Hometown fights, they make you so nervous. I was in my hotel room, I was so nervous. The hometown fights are the worst.”
Still, Prograis outworked and outfought Zorrilla — who spent much of the fight fleeing the combat — en route to a split decision victory in the main event of a Matchroom Boxing card Saturday night on DAZN at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.
Prograis, who scored a third-round knockdown, won 118-109 and 117-110 on two scorecards while one judge scored it 114-113 Zorrilla. Fight Freaks Unite had it 115-112 for Prograis.
