Junior welterweight is one of boxing’s hottest divisions.
It is home to Ryan Garcia, one of the sport’s biggest stars, who is back in action against Oscar Duarte on Dec. 2. There is also WBC titlist Regis Prograis, who defends his crown on Dec. 9 against unified lightweight champion Devin Haney, who is one of boxing’s best fighters and looking to conquer another division.
There is also lineal/WBO champion Teofimo Lopez, who dazzled in June with a clear decision over then-unbeaten champion Josh Taylor in a supreme performance.
And don’t forget the likes of former unified titleholder Jose Ramirez, WBA titlist Rolly Romero, unbeaten contender Arnold Barboza Jr. and rising contenders Richardson Hitchins, Gary Antuanne Russell and Brandon Lee.
The best of the bunch may prove to be Subriel Matias, the IBF titleholder, who none of the other top fighters in the division ever seem to mention, perhaps because of the tremendous thunder in his fists that have led him to scoring all of his victories by knockout.
Matias is back in action for his first title defense against dangerous mandatory challenger Shohjahon Ergashev on the Premier Boxing Champions card headlined by David Benavidez against Demetrius Andrade on Saturday (Showtime PPV, 8 p.m. ET, $74.99) at Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The pay-per-view is also available to via PPV.com and FITE.tv.
