When Mikaela Mayer and Sandy Ryan squared off for the first time in September they put on an instant classic thriller that was tremendously competitive and ended with Mayer winning a majority decision to claim the WBO women’s welterweight title.
The immediate bad-blood rematch came close to matching the first fight for intensity and excitement but it was the relentless Mayer’s overwhelming offense that powered her to a lopsided decision in the main event of the Top Rank Boxing on ESPN card on Saturday night at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas.
Mayer won 98-92, 97-93 and 97-93 to retain the title in her first defense as she fended off a late Ryan charge and set herself up for a potential unification fight for the undisputed title against three-belt titlist Lauren Price.
