David Morrell finished the final “Showtime Championship Boxing” main event with a second-round knockout of Sena Agbeko to retain the WBA “regular” super middleweight title on Saturday night.
The card marked the final event in the 37-year history of the legendary series that featured many of the best and biggest boxing matches for decades as Paramount Global, Showtime’s parent company, announced in mid-October that it would shutter Showtime Sports, including the boxing franchise, at the end of the year.
So, Morrell sent the series out with bang before a sold-out crowd of 5,347 at The Armory in the Cuban defector’s adopted hometown of Minneapolis. The fight was Morrell’s sixth at The Armory and he drew the biggest crowd yet for a boxing event there.
Morrell (10-0, 9 KOs), a 25-year-old southpaw, made his sixth defense and barely broke a sweat in taking out Agbeko (28-3, 22 KOs), 31, a Ghana native fighting out of Nashville, who first gained notice on Showtime’s “ShoBox: The New Generation” prospect series.
