While Jaime Munguia did not harp on the subject during the build up to his fight with John Ryder, the mission was clear: Make the case that he deserves the next shot at undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez by handling Ryder in a more impressive fashion than Alvarez did.
Mission accomplished.
While Alvarez dropped Ryder, broke his nose and won a lopsided decision in an entertaining battle to retain the title last May, Munguia one-upped him in Ryder’s first fight since that loss.
Munguia knocked Ryder down four times en route to a crowd-pleasing, but one-sided ninth-round knockout when Ryder’s corner called for the fight to be stopped in the main event of Golden Boy’s DAZN card Saturday night at the Footprint Center in Phoenix.
