A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription please consider it. If you have already, I truly appreciate it! Also, consider a gift subscription for the Fight Freak in your life.
The new year is upon us, so here is what I want in boxing in 2023:
Fifth year in a row for this one, so I’m sick of writing it: Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford. Come on, guys, enough of the dance.
Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk for all the heavyweight marbles.
While I’m on the heavyweights, Deontay Wilder vs. Anthony Joshua and Fury-Joshua.
For Jaime Mungia to fight an opponent with a pulse for a change instead of ducking everyone.
No more meh fights headlining a pay-per-view with a weak undercard for 80 bucks. I’m so done with that.
Jim Lampley back behind the mic calling big fights where he belongs.
For a major trading card company to produce a boxing-only set. Topps? Upper Deck? Panini? Come on guys!
The 20th anniversary of Diego Corrales-Jose Luis Castillo I is in May 2025, so for Showtime, which televised the greatest fight of all time, to get crackin’ on a documentary to commemorate it. The fight deserves that treatment.
Stephen Fulton vs. Naoya Inoue.
