David Benavidez and his team obviously hope that undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez will pick him as his opponent for his planned PBC pay-per-view fight on Amazon Prime Video in Las Vegas on May 4, but it appears extremely unlikely.
So Benavidez, who is the WBC interim titleholder and the organization’s mandatory challenger — although the WBC has not yet ordered the fight — is making alternative plans so at least he has something lined up.
Benavidez and former lineal/WBC light heavyweight champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk, who is part of Alvarez’s camp, signed bout agreements on Thursday to meet for the vacant WBC interim light heavyweight title in a bout ticketed for “early June,” Benavidez promoter Sampson Lewkowicz told Fight Freaks Unite on Thursday.
The fight likely would headline a Premier Boxing Champions pay-per-view card as part of its deal with Amazon Prime Video.
Lewkowicz said Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs), 33, of Mexico, has a $55 million offer in front of him from PBC boss Al Haymon to fight Benavidez on May 4 but has not made a formal decision. However, Lewkowicz does not expect him to agree to fight Benavidez.
