The first non-pay-per-view show of the Premier Boxing Champions deal with Prime Video, which had not even been officially announced, was postponed on Monday.
Former super middleweight titlist Caleb Plant was slated to fight Trevor McCumby in a 12-rounder on Aug. 17 at the Caribe Royale resort, a venue that has become a regular host to boxing events, in Orlando, Florida, in the main event.
However, McCumby suffered a gash over his right eye sparring on Monday and the fight was postponed, sources with knowledge of the incident told Fight Freaks Unite.
It is unclear why with about a month to go before the fight PBC did not seek a replacement opponent for Plant, the A side of the bout.
Nonetheless, according to one of the sources, there are plans to rescheduled the bout, probably still in Orlando, on a date to be determined in September.
Plant (22-2, 13 KOs), 32, of Las Vegas, is coming off a decision loss challenging David Benavidez for his WBC interim title in March 2023.
McCumby (28-0, 21 KOs), 31, of Glendale, Arizona, has won three fights in a row since dropping down to super middleweight after having fought at light heavyweight for throughout his career, which began in 2010. Despite his glittering record, McCumby has never faced a notable opponent. He also did not fight at all from 2019 to 2022.
The co-feature being planned for Aug. 17 was former unified junior featherweight titlist Stephen Fulton (21-1, 8 KOs), 29, of Philadelphia, who has been out since an eighth-round knockout loss cost him his titles against Naoya Inoue last July, in a featherweight bout with two-time junior featherweight title challenger Ronny Rios (34-4, 17 KOs), 34, of Santa Ana, California.
