For most of his Hall of Fame career, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya, who won 10 world titles in a then-record six weight classes from junior lightweight to middleweight and fought a who’s who of his time, was promoted by Bob Arum of Top Rank.
Together they made numerous mega events and raked in hundreds of millions of dollars. Eventually, they had a falling out. In fact, they had more than one even after having reunited. But that all seems to be in the distant past. In recent years, they have been on good terms and done business together when it made sense.
One of those times was this past Saturday night, when De La Hoya promoted welterweight contender Alexis Rocha’s fight against the Top Rank-promoted Giovani Santillan. By all accounts, it was an easy deal to make and made business sense for everyone involved.
About two weeks before the fight, Arum, who has a home in Beverly Hills, California, paid De La Hoya a visit at his office in downtown Los Angeles to talk about potential fights they could work on together.
