WBC junior middleweight titleholder Sebastian Fundora suffered what was described as a “hand contusion in sparring,” causing his defense against former unified welterweight titlist Keith Thurman to be postponed, Premier Boxing Champions announced on Friday.
The entire card, which was scheduled as a PBC on Prime Video pay-per-view event on Oct. 25 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, was postponed.
“He got hurt and his father (trainer Freddy Fundora) and the doctor said it was not a good idea to fight,” Fundora promoter Sampson Lewkowicz told Fight Freaks Unite. “He got an MRI and X-rays and they say you cannot use the hand for at least three weeks. It’s not serious and there is no fracture but he cannot use the hand for three weeks.”
PBC said a new date “would be forthcoming soon.” Lewkowicz said the plan is to reschedule the fight for January.
“We are working on the date,” Lewkowicz said. “We did not cancel the fight. Like all fighters, he wants to fight. He’s a fighter. He says he could fight anyway but the father and doctor say he cannot use the hand for three weeks. It’s part of boxing.”
