After Usyk optional defense, WBC will mandate Kabayel; interviews with Barrios, Hitchins; Nishida wins 122 eliminator; Golden Boy's March 14 show off due to Ortiz litigation; Quick hits; Show & tell
As a long time subscriber, I hope the Vergil/Boots/GBP/DAZN thing works out. GBP's cards are almost always entertaining. And DAZN is going to need that stable to fill out their promise of monthly PPV worthy cards for the "Ultimate" subs. Which has been a really good deal for me so far.
Top Rank is a head scratcher. I just cant understand it. LFA is a regional/lower level MMA promotion. Id compare them quality wise to Salita Promotions. They recently signed a deal with Vice TV for 25 annual events. They were previously on UFCFightPass. TNA Wrestling just signed multi year deal with AMC. Meanwhile TR is nearly 8 months into tv purgatory.
GBP on Twitter, just announced that March 14th card on DAZN is a done deal. Hopefully that's a good omen for Boots/Vergil. And everyone involved. I would love if the Ring bent their rules a little, and made the fight for their 154 strap. Greedy lol.
Glad, but looks like oscar lost the title unification fight. Haro best i can tell is ranked 7th by wba. Oscar gonna walk through that poor guy. Like you said, hopefully Gomez talked oscar off the cliff and boots/vergil next. Schofield vs Badhi for 135 wba would be another good one we hopefully get
Hi, Dan... long time admirer of your work. I've a question you may have been asked before, but would like to read the answer all the same: if you decided to start the DRBF - Dan Rafael Boxing Federation - in an effort to show how the IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC, WBF, WBO, WBU and the EIEIO for that matter "how it's supposed to be done?" What would be the DRBF's primary rules? How would YOUR perfect sanctioning body be operated?
Nice to see the WBC "order" Usyk to at some point fight his long time mandatory. They managed to never enforce the Canelo-Benavidez fight despite Benavidez being the mandatory and "interim" champ for ages (3 years?)...
So here they've accidentally got around to reading their own rules kinda, as they are still permitting a yet scheduled voluntary defense; wtf? Usyk doesn't have a fight scheduled, his mandatory is overdue, so make the fight or don't, WBC. The idea that Agit has to wait another year probably for this voluntary defense and then the negotiating period and then Usyk's likely dropping the belt in favor of a more lucrative fight... this is all on the WBC.
I mean no disrespect here, but does anyone outside of fanatics 'care' about who the WBC mandatory is? Or who holds what 'Interim' title? On the card where Canelo Alvarez earned his last victory, literally two bouts before - on the same night, at the same place, in the same ring - two guys fought for the WBA's 'Interim' version of the exact same title. "Interim" championships are just one example where a half decent idea quickly became a cash grab. "Mandatory Challenger" status is just another form of it.
I fully understand your point and agree with the absurdity of it all, but two counters:
1) you are on a Substack literally called "Fight FREAKS Unite" so this is where us "fanatics" sometimes come to blow of steam or comment on the nonsense
2) the "casual" fans in my life that rally around the one or two big fights each year know I'm the "boxing guy" and their #1 issue with the sport is you don't know who THE champion is. From outside, the dysfunction of boxing having a million champions is a turnoff.
So better to kvetch about it to an influential voice in the sport (Dan The Man) and not be ambivalent towards it in chats, etc. then to just accept the blatant corruption involved, in my opinion.

You're right on. GBP cards are rarely boring. I hope they land somewhere (TR too) if not back with DAZN.
Ya, sign up TR too! I can't imagine their contract demands being outrageous at this point.
