Mairis Briedis, who reigned as lineal cruiserweight champion and won the WBC, WBO and IBF belts during his 15-year career, announced his retirement on Monday.
Briedis, easily one of the 10 fighters in cruiserweight history and the greatest boxer ever from Latvia, fought a who’s who of his time and was involved in several action-packed fights.
“25 years ago, I stepped into the unknown, putting on boxing gloves for the first time, not realizing at the time that it would lead me to a career as a professional athlete,” Briedis said in a statement translated into English. “Boxing over time became my passion, my career and most of my life.
