Super middleweight contender Jaime Munguia’s B sample has been tested and was also positive for exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites, a banned substance, meaning he now faces the probability of a lengthy suspension and the result of his rematch victory against Bruno Surace being overturned to a no contest.
“We can confirm that Jaime Munguia’s B sample has been opened and analyzed, and consistent with the A sample, was also positive,” Team Munguia said in a statement on Tuesday. “Jaime was present in Utah (at the World Anti-Doping Agency accredited laboratory) for the opening of the B sample, demonstrating his respect for the process and his full commitment to transparency and cooperation at every step.”
The fact that his B sample was consistent with the result of the A sample result returned on May 29 was expected. It is extraordinarily rare for A and B samples to return different results.
Exogenous origin of testosterone — meaning testosterone that was from a source outside of his body — was found in Munguia’s urine sample given to the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association following a unanimous decision win against Surace in their rematch on May 3 on the Canelo Alvarez-William Scull undercard in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
