A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription please consider it. If you have already, I truly appreciate it! Also, consider a gift subscription for the Fight Freak in your life.
After Eduardo “Sugar” Nunez made a triumphant homecoming by scoring two knockdowns against Christopher “Pitufo” Diaz but also finding himself in trouble in their all-out slugfest to retain the IBF junior lightweight title by unanimous decision in Los Mochis, Mexico, on Sept. 6, his countryman and WBO titleholder Emanuel Navarrete joined him in the ring for a face off.
Nunez and Navarrete, two of boxing’s most entertaining fighters, talked up their interest in an all-Mexican unification fight between big punchers.
Now it appears as though the showdown is on the verge of happening in a fight that is targeted for as early as January but certainly in the first quarter of 2026.
Nunez co-promoter Matchroom Boxing and Navarrete promoter Top Rank are in talks for the fight, but Top Rank needs gain approval from mandatory challenger Charly Suarez, who it also promotes, for a deal to step aside.
