Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Golden Boy, who have been at odds since he sued his career-long promoter in mid-January for breach of contract and interference with earnings in U.S. District Court in Nevada, have “reached a deal in principle” that will end their litigation and get the unbeaten WBC interim junior middleweight titlist back in the ring, Ortiz manager Rick Mirigian told Fight Freaks Unite on Monday.
A finalized agreement would keep Ortiz with Golden Boy for three more fights and remove any issues on their side from making a long-awaited fight with WBO/WBA titleholder Jaron “Boots” Ennis as soon as before the end of the year. Golden Boy would also drop its $10 million lawsuit against Mirigian.
Ortiz and Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy had been ordered to court-ordered arbitration that was to have begun earlier this month. However, the arbitrator had a schedule conflict and the arbitration was delayed until late September, but now likely won’t be needed as they close in on finalizing an agreement, Mirigian said.
“We have reached a deal in principle,” Mirigian said. “We are awaiting signatures and then for Golden Boy to have a conversation with (broadcast partner DAZN about Ortiz’s next fight) and then go from there.”
