When David Benavidez moved up in weight and outpointed Oleksandr Gvozdyk to win the vacant WBC interim light heavyweight title in the Gervonta Davis-Frank Martin co-feature on June 15 it left him with a decision to make.
He had to decide if he would keep the interim title at light heavyweight or the WBC interim belt he also held at super middleweight.
After being granted a two-week extension to the WBC’s deadline, Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs), 27, of Phoenix, he has made his decision: He will remain at light heavyweight and vacated the interim belt at 168 pounds.
Benavidez promoter Sampson Lewkowicz sent a letter to the WBC notifying the organization of the decision.
