Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez is exited about his opportunity to make Mexican boxing history.
Ramirez will challenge unbeaten WBA cruiserweight titleholder Arsen Goulamirian in the main event of the Golden Boy Promotions card on Saturday (DAZN, 8 p.m. ET) at YouTube Theater at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California, and can write his name in the history books with a victory.
Ramirez, a former WBO super middleweight titlist and light heavyweight contender, who will be partaking in his second fight since moving up to cruiserweight, has the opportunity to become the first Mexican to win a title in the 200-pound division and to become the heaviest Mexican-born champion in boxing history.
He would surpass the two Mexicans who won light heavyweights world titles, the great Canelo Alvarez, who is the reigning undisputed super middleweight champion and winner of world titles in four divisions, including at 175 pounds in 2019, and the late Julio Gonzalez, who ended Dariusz Michalczewski’s unbeaten 48-0 streak and long title reign to take his WBO title in 2003.
Ramirez had hoped to join them as Mexican-born light heavyweight titleholders but he failed miserably in November 2022 when, as a mandatory challenger, he barely did anything in a one-sided decision loss challenging WBA titlist Dmitry Bivol.
