This past Thursday the New York State Athletic Commission formally suspended Ryan Garcia for one year and the fighter forfeited his $1.1 million official contract purse as punishment for failing multiple drugs tests for the banned performance-enhancing drug Ostarine.
The failed tested were related to Garcia’s April 20 fight with Devin Haney, which was the main event of major DAZN PPV card that Golden Boy Promotions put on at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
In addition, Garcia was fined $10,000 (the maximum allowed by the commission) and Garcia’s majority decision win was changed to a no contest, erasing a win from Garcia’s record and restoring Haney’s undefeated mark.
The suspension also means that Garcia, who was ineligible to win the WBC junior welterweight title from Haney because he was 3.2 pounds overweight, is barred from fighting anywhere in the United States (boxing or any other combat sport) until he is re-licensed. He cannot re-apply for one until next April 20, at which point he would also have to provide a clean drug test.
The settlement agreement for Garcia’s punishment was negotiated by the commission and Garcia, which he and his legal team signed off on in what was in essence a plea bargain.
Once the deal was done the commission memorialized all of the terms related to the case and issued the official “consent order” signed by Matthew Delaglio, the acting executive director of the commission, and Paul Greene, one of Garcia’s attorneys, on Garcia’s behalf.
