Out of the ring for 17 months as he fought through health issues, Vergil Ortiz Jr. finally made his long-awaited return on Saturday night and it lasted less than three minutes.
Ortiz, the power-punching welterweight contender, who was moving up in weight, notched a first-round knockout of Fredrick Lawson in their bout contracted at 156 pounds thanks to referee Tony Week’s shockingly premature stoppage in the main event of the Golden Boy Promotions card on DAZN at the Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas.
