Pacheco, tested in gym by Benavidez, faces Sulecki
Rising super middleweight contender on verge of big fights
A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. As super middleweight up-and-comer Diego Pacheco, the 2023 Fight Freaks Unite prospect of the year, prepares for the most notable opponent of his career in battle-tested former world title challenger Maciej Sulecki, he goes into the fight with the confidence of having gotten elite sparring.
Pacheco trains in the Seattle area under the guidance of Jose Benavidez Sr., which means in the gym with him is Jose’s son, undefeated former two-time WBC super middleweight titlist and reigning WBC interim light heavyweight titleholder David Benavidez, who Jose also trains.
“Man, it’s helped me a lot. Me and David have done thousands and thousands of rounds of sparring together in the past five years,” Pacheco told Fight Freaks Unite. “David is one of those guys that if you’re around him he just wants to make you better.”
Pacheco indeed has gotten better and better since his 2018 pro debut and now is set to face Sulecki in the 12-round main event of the Matchroom Boxing card on Saturday (DAZN, 7:30 p.m. ET) at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, a home fight for the Los Angeles native.
