Welcome to the Fight Freaks Unite recap podcast coming off a weekend that included the tremendous battle between unified light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev and Anthony Yarde that headlined on Saturday in London and an entertaining Golden Boy card that evening on DAZN headlined by welterweight Alexis Rocha’s big knockout of George Ashie. We recapped both shows along with a little news of the week and a bit of nostalgia on the anniversary of a gigantic and historic upset.
Here’s what we discussed on this episode (in order):
Full recap of Beterbiev’s action-packed slugfest with Yarde that ended in an eighth-round knockout victory and hopefully will set the stage for an undisputed title fight with Dmitry Bivol.
As outstanding as the main event was we had the grisly task of taking apart the sewage-like undercard that, among its failures, included having a 7-96-1 (you read that correctly) opponent in a televised bout two fights before the main event and an opponent in the “co-feature” who fell down in 23 seconds without being hit by a real punch.
The announcement (for the third time!) of the Jake Paul-Tommy Fury fight and their in-ring face off and interviews before the Beterbiev-Yarde bout.
Recap and thoughts on Rocha-Ashie and word from Golden Boy that it is talking to Terence Crawford about a deal and that Rocha might be his next opponent.
Discussion of the rest of the Rocha-Ashie card, including the up-and-coming lightweight blue-chip prospect Floyd Schofield’s win in the co-feature and the big KO win by Oscar Collazo in a strawweight eliminator.
Memories of Sunday’s 29th anniversary of Frankie Randall scoring one of the biggest upsets of the 1990s against Julio Cesar Chavez, who was the long-reigning WBC junior welterweight champion and 89-0-1 going into their fight that headlined the first-ever card at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. We chatted about the shock of that fight and the loaded PPV undercard, when it was normal to have deep PPV undercards and not the usual dreck we get these days.
Please give it a listen! Also: rate, review, subscribe and enjoy!
We will be bringing you the weekend recap each Monday. Let me know what you think of the podcast by leaving your comments.
