There was only one card of note this weekend (and many would argue it was not at all that notable!), the DAZN PPV headlined by Floyd Mayweather’s exhibition rematch with John Gotti III. Yeah, we discussed the card. There was nothing else going on! There is also my interview with super middleweight up-and-comer Diego Pacheco, who headlines this Saturday’s Matchroom Boxing card; news of the week; and fight and fighter memories in our nostalgia segment.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Recap and thoughts on Mayweather’s boring and pointless exhibition rematch with Gotti, the grandson of notorious mobster John Gotti, as well as the undercard: junior featherweight contender Alan David Picasso’s decision over Azat Hovhannisyan in a crowd-pleasing fight; Victor Ortiz’s exhibition against Rodrigo Damian Coria; and lightweight prospect Curmel Moton’s first-round destruction of Victor Vazquez.
My interview with Pacheco, who faces the battle-tested former title challenger Maciej Sulecki and we covered several topics: headlining at home in the Los Angeles area; how Matchroom Boxing has moved him since his pro debut; the help he has gotten from top contender David Benavidez, who he shares trainer Jose Benavidez Sr. with and spars with regularly; would he ever fight David; embracing having fought in three different countries besides the United States; thoughts on Sulecki; how big would it be to be the first opponent to stop Sulecki; and the depth of super middleweight and the fights he wants in the future.
I am in my 25th year of full-time boxing coverage. Take advantage of that experience by upgrading to a paid subscription for full access to all posts and comments — and also support independent journalism.
IBF welterweight titlist Jaron “Boots” Ennis facing an Aug. 30 deadline to make a deal for a meaningless rematch/mandatory against Karen Chukhadzhian unless he can secure unification fight before that free negotiation window closes.
Top Rank’s plans for lightweight Keyshawn Davis to have his first main event and hometown fight in Norfolk, Virginia, against Gustavo Lemos.
The William Scull and Vladimir Shishkin camps making a deal and having the purse bid for their vacant IBF super middleweight title fight canceled as they vie for the belt from Canelo Alvarez.
Queensberry promoter Frank Warren signing heavyweight contender Fabio Wardley as he gets set for his rematch with Frazer Clarke on Oct. 12.
Memories on the 26th anniversary of a middleweight title doubleheader on Showtime on which William Joppy pounded and stopped washed up legend Roberto Duran his final world title appearance and referee Mills Lane accidentally shoved Bernard Hopkins out of the ring, causing him to suffer an ankle injury, resulting in a no contest in his first fight against Robert Allen.
A tribute to the late Hall of Famer, two-division world champion and all-time ring warrior Diego “Chico” Corrales on what would have been his 47th birthday.
Please give it a listen! Also: rate, review, subscribe and enjoy!
