There were two big cards on Saturday, the Top Rank/ESPN+ PPV headlined by Devin Haney’s undisputed lightweight title defense against former unified champion Vasiliy Lomachenko and the Matchroom Boxing/DAZN card topped by Katie Taylor’s Ireland homecoming to challenge Chantelle Cameron for her undisputed women’s junior welterweight title. We covered both fights and cards. We also covered two news items and discussed two anniversaries of significant fights involving Bernard Hopkins.
Here’s what we discussed on this episode (in order):
We went deep into all things on Haney-Lomachenko — the fight, the scoring, what was controversial about it (because it wasn’t the result), what might be next and much more.
Full recap of the undercard, including junior lightweight Oscar Valdez’s win over Adam Lopez in a rematch to set up an August title shot; lightweight prospect Raymond Muratalla’s impressive second-round TKO of Jeremia Nakathila; and Junto Nakatani’s dominant performance that ended with an extremely violent knockout of Andrew Moloney to win the vacant WBO junior bantamweight title.
Recap of Cameron’s huge majority decision over Taylor in a terrific fight and upset as well as the stunning third-round knockout loss hyped lightweight prospect Gary Cully suffered in the co-feature at the hands of journeyman Jose Felix.
Matchroom Boxing’s announcement that undisputed women’s junior lightweight champion Alycia Baumgardner will defend the title at home in Detroit on July 15 in a rematch with Christina Linardatou, who handed Baumgardner her only loss, plus the undercard fights of junior welterweight Richardson Hitchins against Montana Love and the pro debut of 2020 Olympic gold medalist Andy Cruz.
Ryan Garcia’s announcement that he will now be trained by reigning trainer of the year Derrick James.
Ringside memories on the 12th anniversary of Hopkins outpointing Jean Pascal to become, at 46, the oldest fighter to win a world title and a discussion of Roy Jones beating Hopkins for his first world title at middleweight 30 years ago.
