A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription please consider it. If you have already, I truly appreciate it! Also, consider a gift subscription for the Fight Freak in your life.
It’s a hybrid episode of the podcast today. There was only one card of note this weekend and we recapped it, Saturday’s Matchroom Boxing show headlined by super middleweight contender Diego Pacheco’s knockout of Maciej Sulecki. But there is also a preview of undisputed junior featherweight champion Naoya Inoue’s defense against TJ Doheny on Tuesday (early morning on ESPN+ in the United States). We also covered plenty of news of the week and also looked back at the anniversary of one fight and paid tribute to all-time great on his birthday.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Recap of Pacheco’s one-sided sixth-round knockout of Sulecki, who had never been stopped, with a brutal body shot and what it means for the WBO No. 1 contender’s future.
The very impressive performance by junior lightweight contender Eduardo “Sugar” Nunez in a sixth-round knockout of veteran former title challenger Miguel Marriaga to maintain his IBF mandatory position in the co-feature.
Preview of Japanese superstar and pound-for-pound great Inoue’s return to defend all four 122-pound belts against former titleholder Doheny in Tokyo.
I am in my 25th year of full-time boxing coverage. Take advantage of that experience by upgrading to a paid subscription to read the rest of this post and for full access to all posts and comments — and also support independent journalism.
The latest on the Jaron Ennis-Brian Norman Jr. welterweight title unification talks ending without a deal and the specific plans for what will now be next for Norman and our take on the whole mess.
The announcement by the WBA that Terence Crawford has vacated its welterweight title, leaving the once undisputed champion with no more 147 belts as he now holds a world title at 154 pounds, and that David Morrell has vacated its “regular” super middleweight belt to retain the “regular” light heavyweight belt he won last month.
The announcement that junior middleweight contender Serheii Bohachuk, in the wake of his close loss to Vergil Ortiz Jr. last month, will return on the undercard of the Oleksandr Usyk-Tyson Fury rematch on Dec. 21 in Riyadh.
News that unified junior bantamweight titlist Fernando Martinez and former titleholder Kazuto Ioka will meet in an immediate rematch on Dec. 31 of the fantastic fight of the year contender in July.
Memories on the 12th anniversary of when Gennadiy Golovkin made his American and HBO debut in spectacular fashion.
On his 48th birthday, a tribute to Hall of Fame legend Erik Morales, who won titles in four divisions and engaged in some of the most memorable fights in boxing history.
Please give it a listen! Also: rate, review, subscribe and enjoy!
