Plus: Hall of Fame elections; passing of Mills Lane; news of the week; Pacquiao back in an exhibition; big fight anniversaries
A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription please consider it. If you have already, I truly appreciate it! Also, consider a gift subscription for the Fight Freak in your life.
We have a really big show that includes our previews of Saturday’s main fights: Terence Crawford’s welterweight title defense vs. David Avanesyan; the junior welterweight title eliminator between Teofimo Lopez and Sandor Martin; and featherweight titlist Josh Warrington’s mandatory defense against Luis Alberto Lopez. But there’s also much more!
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
TJ gets me started on my favorite rock band KISS.
The International Boxing Hall of Fame election results that were announced this week and my thoughts on the results that included Timothy Bradley Jr., Carl Froch and Rafael Marquez being elected in the modern men’s category. But also my take on non-participants Brad “Abdul” Goodman, Brad Jacobs and Joe Goossen and observer Seth Abraham.
Reflecting on the great career of Hall of Fame referee Mills Lane, who died this week at age 85.
The date and site being set for the vacant junior lightweight title fight between Oscar Valdez and Emanuel Navarrete.
A purse bid being schedule for a very interesting fight between secondary welterweight titlist Eimantas Stanionis and Vergil Ortiz Jr.
Thoughts on the Gervonta Davis-Hector Luis Garcia Showtime PPV undercard that was announced this week.
Previewing Crawford’s hometown defense against Avanesyan and what kind of threat does the challenger pose?
Previewing Lopez-Martin, what’s at stake, the heavyweight co-feature between top prospect Jared Anderson and Jerry Forrest, and the rest of that ESPN card.
Previewing Warrington against live underdog Lopez.
Manny Pacquiao has an exhibition on Saturday but is he really retired? We discuss.
Memories of two mega fights I covered that had notable anniversaries this week: 10 years since Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez IV and 15 years since Floyd Mayweather-Ricky Hatton.

Straight shooting on the pod this week good stuff. Dont always agree but still nice to hear the fire for the fight game. No one gets to know the past history of boxing on stats and dates alone you got to have a respect for the fight game to remember past fighters past fight cards. The changing of the guard with HBO, the games promoters play etc... that is what being fan of the sport called boxing is about.... talking it up and calling it as you see. Behind the scences good stuff on match makers and so forth that kept the fight game interesting and moving forward back in the HBO days. Anyhow you know where I am coming from...One thing is for sure no matter who is fighting no matter where, no matter the time when two professional fighters get in the ring anything can happen and damn near anyone can loose on any given night in the ring....
Really enjoyed this show Dan - listened this morning. Loved the talk of Pacquiao v Marquez 4, and the legendary atmosphere of Mayweather v Hatton. Also, sorry to be a pain, but I signed up for the founder's membership last year, and am still looking forward to our video chat. My schedule is flexible, so please let me know when you have time for this - really looking forward to it! Thanks Dan, and enjoy the fights this weekend.
