Podcast: New date and location for Canelo-Crawford mega fight?
Previews of the Fisher-Allen heavyweight rematch, Bohachuk's return against Fox; news of the week; big fight anniversary memories
A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. It’s a light fight weekend with just two bouts to preview but we also covered a lot of news of the week, including the announcement of a new date and venue change for the Canelo Alvarez-Terence Crawford mega fight in September, and looked back on the anniversary of two memorable big fights.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Preview of the Johnny Fisher-Dave Allen heavyweight rematch that headlines the Matchroom Boxing card on DAZN on Saturday in London.
Preview of the return of junior middleweight contender Serhii Bohachuk, who risks his status as the WBC mandatory challenger against Mykel Fox in the main event of the 360 Promotions card on UFC Fight Pass on Saturday night in Commerce, California.
I am in my 26th year of full-time boxing coverage. Take advantage of that experience by upgrading to a paid subscription for full access to all posts and comments — and support independent journalism.
Turki Alalshikh’s announcement that Canelo-Crawford will no longer be on Sept. 12 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and that it would move to Sept. 13, venue to be determined, as well that it will be a Riyadh Season pay-per-view (meaning not a TKO event that was headed for Netflix). Lots going on here.
Thoughts on Thursday’s kickoff news conference in New York for the Edgar Berlanga-Hamzah Sheeraz and Shakur Stevenson-William Zepeda DAZN PPV card that will take place at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York.
Alalshikh’s comments to me about being unsure if he will still put on the Ryan Garcia-Devin Haney rematch this fall following Garcia’s loss to Rolando Romero.
An update on junior lightweight contender Charly Suarez’s appeal of the controversial technical decision loss he suffered to WBO titlist Emanuel Navarrete and Top Rank chairman Bob Arum’s thoughts on doing an immediate rematch and where and when he wants to do it.
The deal made for Xander Zayas and Jorge Garcia to meet for the vacant WBO junior middleweight title and when it is penciled in.
Announcement that Hall of Famer Holly Holm has signed with MVP and is returning to boxing at age 43 after a long UFC career to fight on the June 28 on the Jake Paul-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. pay-per-view undercard.
The nostalgia segment is available on the YouTube channel, which I hope you will subscribe to as we will be increasing the content. There are my ringside memories on 20th anniversary of when Winky Wright turned in a brilliant masterpiece in an absolute domination of Felix Trinidad to send him into his second retirement. Also, we looked back on one of the most shocking results of the era on the 21st anniversary of when Antonio Tarver knocked out Roy Jones in the second round of their light heavyweight title rematch. Maybe HE Turki tired of Dana White's incessant whining, about the big favor he was doing everyone.
