It is a very slow weekend with just one notable fight, the junior welterweight bout between Jack Catterall and Regis Prograis, which headlines the Matchroom Boxing card on DAZN on Saturday in Manchester, England. We previewed and discussed the bout. There is also my interview with former WBC junior lightweight titlist O’Shaquie Foster ahead of his attempt to regain the title next week in a rematch with Robson Conceicao after losing it via controversial decision to him in July. There is also news of the week and our nostalgia segment looking back on the anniversary of major fights.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Preview of the fight between former title challenger Catterall and two-time titleholder Prograis, who meet in a de facto title eliminator. Can Prograis bounce back from a loss and two dismal performances in a row? Can Catterall win and land a second world title shot?
My interview with Foster, whose rematch with Conceicao headlines the Top Rank card on ESPN+ next Saturday. We cover plenty of topics: His reaction to the controversial split decision loss in their first fight in July that cost Foster his title; his reaction to the WBC’s decision to order an immediate rematch; what could he have done differently in the fight; does he need to be more active in the rematch than he was the first time around; what would it mean to him to regain the title; his story of being in jail and watching Terence Crawford become undisputed junior welterweight champion and deciding to dedicate himself to his boxing career when he got out and eventually winning a world title; if he wins the rematch what would he like to do next; and more.
I am in my 25th year of full-time boxing coverage. Take advantage of that experience by upgrading to a paid subscription for full access to all posts and comments — and also support independent journalism.
My reporting that the Gervonta Davis-Lamont Roach fight scheduled for Dec. 14 in Houston may wind up moving to a new date early next year. Hear the latest.
Thoughts on this week’s Oleksandr Usyk-Tyson Fury II kickoff press conference and Fury’s disclosure that his wife suffered a miscarriage at six months the night before the first fight in May.
Undefeated and undisputed women’s strawweight champion Seniesa “Superbad” Estrada’s announcement that she is retiring at age 32.
Announcement of undisputed junior featherweight champion Naoya Inoue’s defense against Sam Goodman on Dec. 24 in Tokyo.
The WBO extending the negotiating period for the mandatory fight between unified middleweight titlist Janibek Alimkhanuly and Hamzah Sheeraz.
Memories on the 34th anniversary of when Evander Holyfield won the undisputed heavyweight title by drilling an out-of-shape Buster Douglas, who was coming off his monumental upset knockout of Mike Tyson.
