Plus: Interview with Mark Boccardi of PPV.com; news of the week; celebrating the anniversaries of three important fights
A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription please consider it. If you have already, I truly appreciate it! Also, consider a gift subscription for the Fight Freak in your life.
There is just one notable fight card this weekend but it’s got a big-time main event: Devin Haney’s WBC junior welterweight title defense against Ryan Garcia on Saturday night in the culmination of what has been a wild promotion. We previewed the fight and the undercard. TJ also interviewed PPV.com’s Mark Boccardi about the fight, which is available to order on his platform (which is also a sponsor of our podcast and this newsletter). We also went over news of the week and discussed three significant fights on their anniversaries.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Preview of Haney-Garcia, including the overall promotion, the crazy stuff that has gone on during fight week, the fight itself, the undercard, and more.
TJ’s interview with Boccardi about the event.
Help me celebrate the start of my 25th year of full-time boxing coverage by upgrading to a paid subscription for full access to all posts and comments — and also support independent journalism.
My reporting on Jermell Charlo’s decision to end his position as the WBA’s junior middleweight “champion in recess” and seek an immediate fight with new titleholder Israil Madrimov, whose team has been in talks for a fight with Terrence Crawford.
Thoughts on this week’s back-to-back news conferences for the Artur Beterbiev-Dmitry Bivol undisputed light heavyweight title fight and the outstanding “5 vs. 5” bouts that will comprise the undercard.
Announcement that undisputed women’s junior welterweight champion Katie Taylor and unified featherweight champion Amanda Serrano will meet in a much-demanded rematch on July 20 on Mike Tyson-Jake Paul card on Netflix.
Ringside memories on the 14th anniversary of when Sergio Martinez outpointed a badly cut Kelly Pavlik to win the lineal and unified WBC/WBO middleweight title.
Memories on the 27th anniversary of when Junior Jones retained the WBO junior featherweight title by decision over Marco Antonio Barrera in a second straight upset against him.
Memories on the 33rd anniversary of when Evander Holyfield outpointed George Foreman to retain the undisputed heavyweight title in a terrific battle that served as the main event of the first modern pay-per-view fight.
Please give it a listen! Also: rate, review, subscribe and enjoy!
We bring you the preview each Friday and the weekend recap each Monday. Let me know what you think of the podcast by leaving your comments.
