A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription please consider it. If you have already, I truly appreciate it! Also, consider a gift subscription for the Fight Freak in your life.
It is a busy weekend with three major cards involving some of the biggest names in boxing and we previewed all of it, including the Canelo Alvarez-William Scull, Ryan Garcia-Rolando Romero and Naoya Inoue-Ramon Cardenas main events. We also covered several notable news items of the week. And our nostalgia segments are available on the Big Fight Weekend YouTube channel, so please subscribe.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Preview of Friday night’s DAZN PPV in New York’s Times Square: Garcia-Romero for the vacant WBA “regular” welterweight title; welterweight Devin Haney against Jose Ramirez; and lineal/WBO junior welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez defending against Arnold Barboza Jr.
Preview of Saturday night’s DAZN PPV in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: Canelo-Scull for the undisputed super middleweight title and the undercard bouts: WBC cruiserweight titlist Badou Jack against former titlist Noel Mikaelian; super middleweight Bruno Surace versus Jaime Munguia in a rematch of Surace’s massive upset KO win in December; and heavyweight Efe Ajagba against Martin Bakole.
Preview of Sunday night’s Top Rank ESPN card in Las Vegas: Inoue’s undisputed junior featherweight title defense against Cardenas and WBO featherweight titlist Rafael Espinoza’s defense against Edward Vazquez in the co-feature.
I am in my 26th year of full-time boxing coverage. Take advantage of that experience by upgrading to a paid subscription for full access to all posts and comments — and support independent journalism.
PBC’s change of plans that will now mean a Sebastian Fundora-Tim Tszyu junior middleweight title rematch this summer and not Tszyu-Keith Thurman or Fundora in a mandatory defense against Xander Zayas.
Former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury’s apparent plans to end his latest retirement.
Heavyweight Fabio Wardley finalizing deal to face Justis Huni in place of Jarrell Miller, who withdrew claiming a shoulder injury.
The Matchroom and DAZN announcement of four spring/summer cards.
Ringside memories on the 10th anniversary of the long-awaited all-time mega fight, which turned out to be a complete dud, between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao to unify welterweight titles and crown the king of the era.
