LAS VEGAS — This is a big one, the biggest fight of the year so far as Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia finally do battle on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena. We previewed the fight and the undercard and also previewed the Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov-Joe Cordina junior lightweight title bout on DAZN. We also went over news of the week and reflected on the anniversary of a key fight in the career of the great Floyd Mayweather.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
A full preview with thoughts on various aspects of Garcia-Davis, including Thursday’s news conference, the magnitude of the event, the atmosphere and media coverage of the event.
Previewing the PPV undercard, including David Morrell’s defense of the WBA secondary super middleweight belt against Yamaguchi Falcao and Morrell’s star potential.
Discussion of what Showtime Sports president Stephen Espinoza had to say about the negotiations for an undisputed welterweight title fight between Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford in our previous podcast episode.
Previewing Rakhimov’s first junior lightweight title defense against former titlist Joe Cordina.
The positive drug test of WBA junior welterweight titlist Alberto Puello, who has been dropped from a defense against Rolando Romero on May 13 on Showtime and the probability Romero will instead face Ismael Barroso.
The rescheduling of the already twice-postponed fight between WBA “regular” welterweight titlist Eimantas Stanionis and mandatory challenger Vergil Ortiz Jr. to July 8.
Memories on the 21st anniversary of Floyd Mayweather’s rise to lightweight for a controversial win over Jose Luis Castillo in their first fight, which was the closest Mayweather ever came to losing in his legendary career.

Both of the last podcasts were fascinating. Hearing Ryan Garcia, talking about Gervonta Davis’s best assets was really eye-opening, never quite heard that directly from a fighter that way. Also, his general disinterest in “swag” aka belts, versus fighting the best fighters out there. Winning the big fights meeting so much more to him.
