A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription please consider it. If you have already, I truly appreciate it! Also, consider a gift subscription for the Fight Freak in your life.
There are two world title fights on Saturday, Regis Prograis’ WBC junior welterweight defense against Danielito Zorrilla in the main event of the Matchroom Boxing event on DAZN and Tim Tszyu’s WBO interim junior middleweight defense against Carlos Ocampo in the main event of the No Limit Boxing card on Showtime. We previewed and discussed all aspects of both fights. We also discussed plenty of news — including Teofimo Lopez vacating the WBO junior welterweight title five days after winning it and announcing his retirement — and anniversaries of a pair of major boxing events.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Reaction and discussion of Lopez’s decision to vacate his title and retire. What happened; how it caught Top Rank off guard; why he did; more.
Prograis’ defense against Zorrilla: His mindset going into the hometown fight in New Orleans; his focus on Zorrilla; what Zorrilla brings to the table; more.
Tszyu’s defense against Ocampo: His recovery from a bad dog bite; what to expect in the fight; how tough is Ocampo; will we see Jermall Charlo finally make the postponed mandatory defense of the undisputed title versus Tszyu next if he wins.
Thoughts on this week’s excellent Spence-Crawford two-city media tour and more of our excitement for this great and historic match.
Zhilei Zhang to defend the WBO interim heavyweight belt against Joe Joyce in an immediate rematch being planned for Sept. 2.
Announcement that future Hall of Famer Nonito Donaire will face Alexandro Santiago for the vacant WBC bantamweight title on July 15.
Golden Boy’s announcement of the Eimantas Stanionis-Vergil Ortiz Jr. undercard, which includes blue chip lightweight prospect Floyd Schofield.
Memories of when Mike Tyson and George Foreman co-headlined a heavily hyped HBO card co-promoted by rivals Don King and Bob Arum and scored big knockouts in what was supposed to be a prelude to a Tyson-Foreman mega fight (that unfortunately never happened) 33 years ago this week.
Memories on the 39th anniversary of when Thomas Hearns scored a gargantuan second-round knockout of Roberto Duran to retain the WBC junior middleweight title in the one of the fights in legendary series of bouts among the “Four Kings.”
