Podcast: Recap of Jack Catterall's victory against Regis Prograis
The undercard; news of the week; huge fight anniversaries
A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. It was a slow weekend for notable cards with just one, the Matchroom Boxing event headlined by junior welterweight Jack Catterall against Regis Prograis in Manchester, England, and we recapped and discussed it. There is also news of the week and the anniversary of three fights, including perhaps the most famous fight of all time.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Recap of Catterall’s decision win over former two-time titleholder Prograis: How bad it was for about seven rounds, how Catterall left no doubt and what’s next for him, and will Prograis retire as he suggested he would.
Recap of the co-feature in which junior welterweight James Flint made it 2-for-2 with a hard-fought decision over Campbell Hatton in their action-packed rematch.
I am in my 25th year of full-time boxing coverage. Take advantage of that experience by upgrading to a paid subscription for full access to all posts and comments — and also support independent journalism.
Matchroom Boxing’s announcement of its annual card in Monte Carlo on Dec. 14, which this year will be headlined by Murodjon Akhmadaliev versus Ricardo Espinoza Franco for the vacant WBA interim junior featherweight title.
Frank Warren’s signing of two-division titlist Lawrence Okolie, who is moving up to heavyweight.
Memories on the 37th anniversary of when Thomas Hearns knocked out Juan Domingo Roldan in the fourth round of a memorable shootout to make history as the first fighter to win a world title in four divisions.
Memories on the 31st anniversary of when Tommy Morrison, who already had a signed contract to earn $8 million in a shot at then-WBC heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, took a hometown tune-up fight and got drilled in the first round by Michael Bentt.
Discussion on the 50th anniversary of what I consider the single most famous fight in boxing history — when Muhammad Ali knocked out George Foreman in the eighth round to regain the heavyweight title in the iconic “Rumble in the Jungle.”

Great job, Dan. Not sure about Prograis' foray into bareknuckle, but I guess he's made enough money for plastic surgery and hand replacements when needed!
