A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription please consider it. If you have already, I truly appreciate it! Also, consider a gift subscription for the Fight Freak in your life.
It was a busy boxing weekend with notable fights around the globe and we recapped them, most notably the massive controversy of Emanuel Navarrete’s technical decision over Charly Suarez on Saturday night. We also went over news of the week. And our nostalgia segment is available on the Big Fight Weekend YouTube channel, so please subscribe and check it out.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Recap of the Top Rank ESPN main event in San Diego, where Navarrete claimed an eighth-round technical decision over Suarez to retain the WBO junior lightweight title in an action-packed fight. We discussed in detail the debate over whether Navarrete’s cut was from a punch or a head butt, the replay analysis, the probability that the result will be changed, and our thoughts on what we think should happen.
Recap of the co-feature in which Raymond Muratalla routed Zaur Abdullaev to win the vacant IBF interim lightweight title.
Recap the Queensberry DAZN main event in Nottingham, England, where former junior lightweight titlist Anthony Cacace stopped hometown hero Leigh Wood in the ninth round of an outstanding performance in an entertaining fight.
I am in my 26th year of full-time boxing coverage. Take advantage of that experience by upgrading to a paid subscription for full access to all posts and comments — and support independent journalism.
Recap of the ProBox headliner in Kissimmee, Florida, where hometown fighter Erickson Lubin stopped Ardreal Holmes in the 11th round of an IBF junior middleweight eliminator to earn a mandatory title shot.
Recap of the outstanding fight on Sunday in Tokyo, where Fernando Martinez retained the WBA junior bantamweight title by decision in a rematch with Kazuto Ioka.
My reporting on plans in the works for a summer return of four-division champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, who is ranked No. 1 in three organizations at junior bantamweight, ahead of a likely title shot.
My reporting on the likely inclusion of Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz, quite possibly in a rematch with Angel Fierro, on the Manny Pacquiao-Mario Barrios card penciled in for July 19.
The nostalgia segment is available on the YouTube channel, which I hope you will subscribe to as we will be increasing the content. It’s my ringside memories on the 24th anniversary of when the great Felix Trinidad moved up to middleweight and knocked out William Joppy to win the WBA title in the semifinals of the Don King/HBO four-man tournament at the electric Madison Square Garden in one o the most supreme big-fight atmospheres I have ever been in.
