There was just one significant fight over Thanksgiving weekend, and that was in Birmingham, England, where Galal Yafai dominated and stopped former flyweight titlist Sunny Edwards to claim the vacant WBC interim flyweight title in the main event of the Matchroom Boxing card on DAZN on Saturday. We recapped the fight and also covered several notable news items of the week. And then we looked back at two big-time fights on their anniversary in our nostalgia segment.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Recap of 2020 Olympic gold medalist Yafai’s demolition of Edwards, who announced his retirement afterward. What happened, was this more about how good Yafai is or how done Edwards is, and what’s next for Yafai?
My reporting on the Vergil Ortiz-Jaron “Boots” Ennis fight being planned for the huge Feb. 22 Riyadh Season card falling part because of Ennis’ side.
The official announcement that WBA lightweight titlist Gervonta “Tank” Davis will defend against WBA junior lightweight titlist Lamont Roach Jr. on March 1 on Prime Video PPV at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, with thoughts on the fight.
I am in my 25th year of full-time boxing coverage. Take advantage of that experience by upgrading to a paid subscription for full access to all posts and comments — and also support independent journalism.
My reporting that WBA junior welterweight titlist Jose Valenzuela will make his first defense against Gary Antuanne Russell on the Davis-Roach undercard.
The IBF ordering a final heavyweight title eliminator between Martin Bakole and Efe Ajagba.
Memories on the 45th anniversary of a tremendous ABC-televised prime time card featuring Sugar Ray Leonard’s 15th-round knockout of Wilfred Benitez to win the WBC welterweight title and Marvin Hagler’s draw against undisputed middleweight champion Vito Antuofermo.
Ringside memories on the 24th anniversary of when Felix Trinidad stopped Fernando Vargas in the 12th round to unify the WBA and IBF junior middleweight titles in the greatest 154-pound title fight ever.
