There was just one notable card on Saturday, the Boxxer show headlined by the middleweight rematch between Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr. We discussed the fight and the undercard. We also went over various news items of the week and looked back on anniversaries of two significant fights involving four Hall of Famers.
Here’s what we discussed on this episode (in order):
Recap of Eubank’s masterful and dominating 10th-round knockout of Smith to decisively avenge his fourth-round knockout loss in January. We discussed what does it mean for the middleweight division; Brian McIntyre, Eubank’s new trainer, getting a second huge win in barely a month; what could be next for Eubank; more.
Recap of the Smith-Eubank II undercard, including junior welterweight Adam Azim’s victory; heavyweight Frazer Clark’s stoppage of Dave Allen; and Mikaela Mayer’s shutout win in her junior welterweight debut and the big fight it could have set the stage for.
Errol Spence Jr.’s decision to invoke his contractual right to an immediate rematch with Terence Crawford for a fight that still needs Crawford to determine whether it will be at welterweight or junior middleweight and for a date to be set.
Announcement that welterweight contenders Alexis Rocha and Giovani Santillan will headline a Golden Boy card on Oct. 21 (DAZN).
My near-meltdown about the WBA reinstating Mahmoud Charr as its “regular” heavyweight titlist as part of a settlement of Charr’s lawsuit and the absurdity of him being ordered to face Jarrell Miller by Oct. 14.
Announcement by Top Rank that the Janibek Alimkhanuly-Vincenzo Gualtieri middleweight unification bout is set for Oct. 14 in Rosenberg, Texas, and that lightweight prospect Keyshawn Davis will fight Nahir Albright in the co-feature.
Memories on the 26th anniversary of a young Erik Morales stopping fellow future Hall of Famer in the 11th round a hard-fought battle on HBO to win his first world title (the WBC junior featherweight belt) and send Zaragoza into retirement.
Discussion on the 117th anniversary of when Joe Gans retained the lightweight world title by defeating fellow Hall of Famer Battling Nelson in the first of their three lightweight championship fights when Nelson was disqualified for a low blow in the 42nd round of a fight-to-the-finish bout.
