Also talking Whyte-Franklin, Parker-Ryder and more
A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. Welcome to the Fight Freaks Unite recap podcast coming off a weekend that included three notable fights on Saturday: Regis Prograis’ 11th-round knockout of Jose Zepeda to win the vacant WBC junior welterweight title; Dillian Whyte’s debatable decision over Jermaine Franklin in an exciting heavyweight battle; and John Ryder’s fifth-round stoppage of Zach Parker due to broken hand to win the vacant WBO interim super middleweight belt. We recapped and discussed each of those fights and some of the undercard action.
Here’s what we discussed on this episode (in order):
Prograis’ excellent and exciting win over Zepeda, where he stacks up at 140 pounds and what kinds of fights might be in his immediate future in a loaded weight class.
Heavyweight up-and-comer Bakhodir Jalolov’s ruthless fourth-round KO of Curtis Harper on the undercard and a breakdown of why Jalolov is already somebody to be reckoned with.
More on the undercard: junior middleweight prospect Charles Conwell’s tough, grueling win over Juan Carlos Abreu; Yokasta Valle’s win over Evelyn Bermudez to claim the unified women’s junior flyweight title; and junior middleweight Fernando Vargas Jr.’s second-round KO of Alejandro Martinez.
Whyte’s win over Franklin in a terrific fight. My take on the questionable scoring, the chances of Whyte getting an Anthony Joshua rematch next and how Franklin raised his stock despite the loss.
Fabio Wardley’s knockout of Nathan Gorman to win the vacant British heavyweight title in the Whyte-Franklin co-feature.
Ryder’s interim 168-pound title win over Parker due to injury. Disappointing fight all around but Ryder positions himself for possible Canelo Alvarez fight.
Please give it a listen! Also: rate, review, subscribe and enjoy!
